Acids on the skin? Not a crazy science experiment or torture device, it’s actually one of the best ways to improve the overall look and feel of your skin! Did you know that acids have been clinically proven in a variety of studies to fight acne, wrinkles, age spots, scarring and hyperpigmentation (or uneven skin tone).
While there are many different skin-boosting acids out there, today we are going to address acids in general and share some of our favorite acid-containing products to boost your beauty routine.
How do acids work?
Generally speaking, acids help to exfoliate the skin by gently disolving the “glue” that holds the cells together so that they can be easily removed from the surface without harsh or damaging scrubs.
This increases the rate of cellular turnover so that old and dull skin cells are removed faster and replaced with fresher more radiant skin cells (thats how you get that unmistakable glow).
Who can use acids on their skin?
Pretty much anyone can use acids on their skin, but if you have very sensitive skin or broken/irritated skin then you should consult with a doctor before starting any acid products.
Also, while acids are an amazing beauty-enhancing tool, it’s very important to use properly formulated skincare products because acids can be irritating, especially if you have sensitive skin. No DIY when it comes to facial acids
Those with sensitive skin don’t have to miss out on gorgeous fresh skin just because their skin needs a little extra TLC. You can use acid-containing products that have lower concentrations of acids or gentler forms of acids such as the Ayuna Facial in the low concentration or Indie Lee’s Gentle Daily Peel Pads.
What results can I expect?
Those with acne-prone skin should notice a reduction in the amount of breakouts, plus less redness and hyperpigmentation if you continue to use acids for several weeks.
Those with mature skin should notice less fines lines, and fuller + brighter skin after using continually for a few weeks.
Those with dehydrated skin should notice that their skin requires less moisturizing products and looks fuller and brighter (instead of dull and dehydrated)
Those with hyperpigmentation (sun spots, dark spots, etc.) should notice a visible reduction in skin spots, but of all of the skin concerns listed, hyperpigmentation is particularly stubborn and may require several weeks of continued usage before you notice results. Don’t give up! Your skin will thank you!
A note on sun protection:
While the acids that are mentioned here (and are available at our store) are gentle and safe, it is suggested that whenever you are using exfoliating products (such as acids, retinols, etc). that you use a daily SPF to protect the fresh skin and prevent future damage.
